There is a tropical depression dumping rain on South/Central Florida, nothing new for us, but it always makes you look over your shoulder and wonder what’s coming. When I was a kid it was one big adventure. This was well before the Weather Channel when all we had was the poor guy out at the airport giving us the play by play over the short wave weather radio. These storms were an excuse to be out of school, play in the mud in our Jeeps and trucks, run chainsaws, and get into trouble. Be that the entire town was out electricity, we would cookout with our neighbors, help each other, dig out and just survive. Not much as changed other than I am older and Will is doing the same stupid stuff I did 30 years later. It's pay back for everything I put my Dad through.
We got caught in a tropical depression down at the beach house a couple of years ago and it was something to behold. We went to bed one night and it was on us the next morning having changed directions during the night. It is amazing how powerful the wind and ocean can be and there is nothing you can do about it. Now that I’m older and wiser, I find I don’t need those kinds of adventures anymore. Plus living a week without power, water and a/c like we did last year after Hermaine just isn't as much fun as it was when we were kids. Now a days, I am looking for that soft cool breeze and a good place to watch it drift by. I’ll leave the adventures to the young Will's of the world and to the silly people on the Weather Channel this year as we wait patiently till November, the end of the Hurricane Season.
